LAMB DECISION WELCOMED

New Zealand had taken the sensible course of action by deciding not to export lamb to Australia in 1985, the Shadow Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Ralph Hunt, said tonight.

"The short and longer-term costs to Australian producers from being undercut by imports carrying effective subsidies of up to 700 per cent would have been enormous.

"By damaging the Australian market NZ producers would have worsened their longer-term prospects on our market, with or without the benefits of subsidies.

"The decision by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board not to sell heavily subsidised lamb to Australia is a victory not only for the Australian industry but also for economic commonsense.

"The NZMPB has removed a potentially serious threat to the strength of our Closer Economic Relations agreement," Mr Hunt said.
