NEWS RELEASE BY JOHN IjOWARD MP L7/85

REPORT OF DISCUSSION BETWEEN JOHN HOWARD AND JIM McLAY, NEW ZEALAND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

This morning a meeting was held between Mr Howard and

Mr Jim McLay, Leader of the Opposition in New Zealand.

This was the first meeting between the Leaders since

Mr Howard's election as Leader of the Liberal Party.

A number of subjects were covered in the discussion

including economic, trade and foreign policy issues.

Both Mr Howard and Mr McLay expressed the hope that the ANZUS alliance would once again become the cornerstone of the defence relationship between Australia, New Zealand

and the United States.

ANZUS has clearly been prejudiced by the Lange Government's

action in denying port access to "nuclear capable"

vessels of the United States.

The situation will be further aggravated by the New

Zealand Government's intention to pass legislation

confirming this ban .

Both Leaders emphasised the importance to Australia

and New Zealand of a continued close defence and strategic relationship both between themselves and

with the United, States.
