MINISTER DISAGREES WITH PREMIER ON EAST-WEST ISSUE

The Minister for Sport, Recreation & Tourism, Hon. John Brown |

disagrees with the Premier of Western Australia, Brian Burke, on j . ' , , >

the Federal Labor Government's ban on East-West Airlines' j

i

Sydney-Yulara-Perth service. \

This was obvious in his reply to my question in Federal j

Parliament today expressing concern at the effect of the j

termination of the service oh the viability of the new Yulara , I

. ■ I (Ayers Rock) tourist complex in the Northern Territory. ί

He rejected the comment of the Premier that East-West should be i allowed to continue the service and if this could not be done j

without a High Court challenge then the Federal Labor Government j should amend the two airline legislation. *

The Minister indicated his support for the hard line attitude of the Minister for Aviation that no change would occur until 1990.

The East-West issue has ended for all time any justification for the two airline policy and has confirmed community fears that the Minister for Aviation is a strong supporter of a restrictive domestic aviation system. '

It has also burst the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism's cocoon of self-expressed concern for policies to assist tourist development in Australia.
