NEWS RELEASE SHADOW MINISTER FOR AVIATION

MINISTER* S CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR BADGERY'S CREEK

The residents of Badgery* s Creek will have a hell of a Christinas now that

the Federal Labor Government has deferred a decision on the site of a second

Sydney airport until February at the earliest.

Badgery’s Creek is the most likely choice so the worst Christmas of all will

be for the landholders directly affected by such an airport.

The Minister for Aviation, Peter Morris, had assured the Wilton and Badgery’s

Creek communities that they would know before Christmas. This is another

example of the failure of the Labor Government and of the Minister to make

the tough decisions.

There is now not even a guarantee that the decision will be made in February.

The Federal Opposition will accept the Government's decision when it is

finally made and any compensation arrangements will be honoured.

However, the need to maintain Sydney as the premier airport will force

whoever is the Federal Government at that time to construct a parallel runway

at Mascot by the early 1990's.

This will be immeasurably cheaper than a second airport and ten to 15 years

quicker. Noise reduction at Mascot would be an integral part of the runway

plan as the Opposition is opposed to the lifting of the curfew in the

foreseeable future.
