PETER FISHER ACTING SHADOW MINISTER FOR AVIATION 25 JUNE 1985

DICK SMITH ALLEGATIONS PRIMA FACIE CASE FOR AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW BODY

Following the deadline for written submissions to a House of Representatives sub-committee enquiring into the 1 Dick Smith allegations', Mr Peter Fisher, Acting Shadow Minister for Aviation today restated the need for the establishment of a

seperate and ongoing independent review body for air safety regulations.

Mr Dick Smith's booklet "Two Years in the Hall of Doom", focuses on some startling, questionable and arbitary practices in an area which has for too long been closed to independent scrutiny. It contains a stinging indictment of the Federal Department of Aviation infrastructure and apparent policy.

"Whilst it could be conceded that the sub-committee has the necessary credentials to enquire into the management and bureacracy of the Department there is not much point reviewing Mr Smith's allegations with a Parliamentary Committee that is hamstrung, chaired and represented in the majority by the Government. Certainly the sub-committee does not have the

expertise nor the time to enquire into the specialised field of air safety regulations," he said.

As it is understood that the sub-committee will be holding its first public hearing on the Darling Harbour Helipad issue oh Monday 5 August in Sydney Mr Fisher concluded by urging the General Aviation Industry to respond with vigour to the hearing,

and to support the call for an independent review body.
