SENATOR S.J. COLLARD LEADER OF THE NATIONAL PARTY IN THE SENATE THE SENATE

MEDIA RELEASE SHADOW MINISTER FOR ARTS, HERITAGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

DATE 28 NOVEMBER 1 9 8 5 No. 11/5

QUEENSLAND RAINFORESTS DESTROYED ONLY BY MEDIA

SHADOW ENVIRONMENT M INISTER, SENATOR STAN COLLARD (NP Q L D ),

SLAMMED THE NEW SOUTH WALES ENVIRONMENT M INISTER, MR CARR, OVER

HIS CRITICISM OF QUEENSLAND'S RECORD ON RAINFOREST PROTECTION.

MR CARR WAS REPORTED ON THE A . B . C . ' S "QUANTUM" AS SAYING THAT

QUEENSLAND WAS ALLOWING THE DESTRUCTION OF THE LAST OF THE WET

TROPICAL RAINFORESTS AND THAT THIS WAS BARBARIC.

SENATOR COLLARD RETALIATED BY POINTING OUT THAT THE NEW SOUTH

WALES BOAST ABOUT IT S VAST AREA OF RAINFOREST UNDER PROTECTION I S

MORE OF A WHIMPER WHEN COMPARED WITH THAT WHICH QUEENSLAND HAS

SET ASIDE - NEW SOUTH WALES HAS 2 5 3 , 0 0 0 HA UNDER RAINFOREST

TENURE WHILST QUEENSLAND HAS THREE TIMES AS MUCH IN NATIONAL

PARKS AND FORESTRY RESERVES THAT WILL NOT BE LOGGED. A FURTHER

1 4 3 , 0 0 0 HA I S AVAILABLE FOR SELECTIVE LOGGING BUT UNDER STRICTLY

CONTROLLED CONDITIONS.

THE SENATOR WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE MINISTER SHOULD CHECK HIS

FACTS AND FIGURES BEFORE MAKING SUCH OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS ABOUT

QUEENSLAND'S HANDLING OF ONE OF IT S MOST IMPORTANT RESOURCES.

QUEENSLAND HAS A VERY CREDIBLE RECORD WITH REGARD TO RAINFOREST

PROTECTION REALIZING THERE I S NOTHING TO BE GAINED FROM THE

DESTRUCTION OF IT S RAINFORESTS - WHY CUT OFF O N E'S NOSE TO S P IT E

ONE' S FACE 1

SENATOR COLLARD CONCLUDED BY SAYING THAT TH IS WAS THE SECOND

SO-CALLED "PUBLIC AFFAIRS" PROGRAMME FROM THE A . B . C . ON

RAINFORESTS THAT WAS MORE THAN A LITTLE SUBJECTIVE WHEREAS ONE

WOULD EXPECT A BALANCED POINT OF VIEW FROM A PUBLIC U TILITY ON

SUCH A CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECT. IT WAS AS I F THE A . B . C . HAD A

DEATH WISH BY CONTINUALLY GIVING EVIDENCE OF THE FACT THAT IT IS

SUPERFLUOUS AND AN UNNECESSARY WASTE OF TAXPAYERS' FUNDS.
