JOINT STATEMENT

Tasmania's five Liberal MHR's have welcomed the visit to Hobart of the U.S.S. Texas. .

In a Joint Statement issued in Canberra today, Mr Michael Hodgman MHR, Mr Bruce Goodluck MHR, Mr Max Burr MHR, Mr Warwick Smith MHR and Mr Chris Miles MHR re-affirmed their total support for the ANZUS Treaty and

the right of United States Ships to visit Australian ports.

"On behalf of the overwhelming majority of Tasmanians we welcome the visit of the U.S.S. Texas to Hobart. Unlike the present Federal Government we have a total commitment to . ANZUS - which is clearly Australia's principal Defence Treaty. We would wish to assure the ship's-company of the U.S.S. Texas that the small but noisy group of protesters are

an unrepresentative minority - and, frankly, should be ignored. We look forward to the day when these protesters might actually protest about the Soviet Union - which has the largest Nuclear Arsenal in the world," the Federal Members said.
