PRESS STATEMENT BY THE HON. JIM CARLTON M.P. ' S H A D O W T R E A S U R E R

OPPOSITION I.D. CARD MOVE WILL SAVE TAXPAYERS MONEY

Far from having the effect of protecting tax cheats, the Opposition's proposal to have a Senate Committee take a closer look at the I.D. card proposal will save taxpayers money.

Before spending $3.5 million this year and nearly $300 million over the next 3 years before a single tax cheat dollar is saved, the Government needs to convince the public that it has thought its proposal through.

Dr Blewett's claim that the $3.5 million is needed this year merely to plan the introduction of the card smacks of Australian Bicentennial Authority type extravagance.

Yesterday Dr Blewett admitted that the proposal was half baked when he said:

"At this stage we would not be able to answer a committee's questions on the fine detail of how the card will work." (A.F.R. 16 October 1985)

It should not cost $3.5 million to answer those questions.

Also it is ludicrous that a total of about $300 million would have to be spent before the miserable net return of $19 million forecast by the Treasurer would be obtained in 1989/90.

It is essential that a Senate Committee examine the proposal in depth if there is not to be a gross waste of .

taxpayers funds.
