MEDIA RELEASESENATOR FRED CHANEY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE

22/85

The government's double standards and downright dishonesty over the release of financial information has reached new heights.

Today's opposition by Treasurer Keating to the release of forward expenditure estimates underlines the hypocrisy of the Hawke Government.

It also puts him publicly at odds with the Minister for Finance, Senator Walsh, who told me in the Senate three weeks ago he had "a tentative intention of releasing details of them (outlays) in May".

Mr Keating is currently in the middle of a battle with the Foreign Minister over access to economic forecasts.

Now he has taken on Senator Walsh in another attempt to cover up.

In 1983, the government gleefuly released estimates of revenue and expenditures to suit its own grubby political ends.

They reneged on revenue last year but it is now quite incredible that the Treasurer should consider keeping the expenditure estimates under wraps.
