SENATOR THE HON PETER BAUME SHADOW MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND YOUTH AFFAIRS

"GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS SHORTCHANGED"

"G overnment schools across Australia have been shortchanged by $37 MILLION DOLLARS IN 1983/84 AND FACE THE PROSPECT OF LOSING ANOTHER $74 MILLION PROMISED TO THEM BY THE HAWKE GOVERNMENT, the Opposition S pokesman for E ducation , S enator P eter B aume said today , .

"T he Minister , S enator R yan during question time today refused TO CONFIRM THAT AN EXPLICIT PRE-ELECTION PLEDGE, COMMITTING $111 MILLION OVER 3 YEARS TO GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS WOULD BE HONOURED.

"T his is yet another broken promise within the education portfolio AND IS EVIDENCE THAT THE GOVERNMENT'S COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION IS BY RHETORIC ONLY.

"T hose G overnment school parents and teachers who put their faith in the H awke G overnment will be bitterly disappointed . .

"A ll the wordy abuse by the Minister directed at the previous Government will not hide the fact that G overnment schools HAVE BEEN DOUBLECROSSED BY THIS GOVERNMENT.

"T oday 's answer by the Minister means the G overnment cannot guarantee THAT THE PROMISED MONEY WILL EVER MATERIALISE.
