MINISTER FOR INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE SENATOR JOHN BUTTON

News Release News Release 31 July 1984 60/84

The announcement that the Portland aluminium smelter is to go ahead will give further impetus to national economic recovery.

The Federal Government warmly welcomes this development and

congratulates the Victorian Government and the parties involved in successfully resolving past difficulties..

The smelter project will be a most significant boost for Australia's exports.

It is also most encouraging and timely news for the heavy engineering industry, which has been badly hit by the falling off of the resources boom.

This industry will benefit immensely and, in turn, that means new jobs.

The completion of the project also will mean that a further

step is being taken in the processing of our natural resources.

When peak construction is reached at the project, more than

6,000 will be employed directly and indirectly throughout Australia.

When the smelter is operational, 1,000 jobs will be created directiy.

At full production, the plant will generate spending of more

than $300 million on wages, salaries, goods and services.
