News Release News Release 23 November 1984 IMMEDIATE RELEASE 121/84

INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REFERENCE: ROUGHER HEADED TIMBER

The Industries Assistance Commission (IAC) had been asked to

report within 90 days on what rate of duty should apply to imports

of rougher headed timber, the Minister for Industry and Commerce,

Senator John Button, said today.

Rougher headed timber is wood sawn lengthwise and worked on one

side or two adjoining sides with a sizer so as to provide

dimensions more accurate than those obtainable with high-speed

sawing.

The Minister said that the reference followed advice from the

Australian Customs Service that imports of rougher headed timber

were classifiable to tariff item 44.13.9 which carries a duty of

17.5 per cent (phasing to 15 per cent on 10 December 1984).

Previously, these imports had been entered under tariff item

44.05 dutiable at five per cent.

The increased duty could affect the availability and prices of

a range of building timbers. He had, therefore, decided that

the IAC should inquire urgently into the rate of duty for rougher

headed timber.

A copy of the reference is attached.
