MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION AND ETHNIC AFFAIRS

32/84 The Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs Mr.West today

commented on a Gallup Pole which reportedly showed that 64% of

Australians believed that a migrant intake of 90,000 for this

year was too high and that 62% disapproved of the increasing

proportion of Asian migrants ,

Mr.West recalled that in Parliament last March he stated that the

1983/84 migrant intake estimate had been revised downwards to

approximately 70,000.

"Perhaps the results of the pole might have been different if the

pollsters had used the right figures", he said.

On the question of the increasing percentage of Asian migrants

Mr.West noted that the percentage of Asians among total settler

arrivals has risen only from 29.4% in 1978/79 to 33.2% in 1983/84

Mr.West said " the Opposition can take no comfort from this poll

since their leader , Mr,Peacock has called for a" balanced "

migrant intake consisting of the sat

an increase in the numbers of U.K. and European migrants.

This means that the Opposition is calling for a substantially

increased migrant intake in excess of 100,000 persons. "
