HOUSING MINISTERS TO CONSIDER FEDERAL PROPOSALS

The Federal M i n i s t e r f o r Housing and C o n s t r u c t i o n , C h ri s H u r f o r d ,

w i l l d e t a i l t he Federal Government's o f f e r under the proposed

new Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement (CSHA) at a meeting o f S t a t e and T e r r i t o r y Housing M i n i s t e r s t o be h e l d in Hobart tomorrow.

" I am c o n f i d e n t t h a t t he pr oposals c ont ai ned in t he new Agreement

w i l l pr ov id e a b e t t e r deal f o r those A u s t r a l i a n s most in need of

housing a s s i s t a n c e , " s a i d Mr H u r f o r d .

"The new Agreement i n cl ud es a proposal t h a t co st r e nt s be i n tr o d u c e d

f o r p u b l i c housing t e n a n t s .

"The cost r e n t f ormul a w i l l ensure t he p u b l i c housing st ock i s not

eroded, w h i l e at t he same t ime pr ovi de a b e t t e r deal f o r t e n a n t s " ,

Mr Hurf ord s a i d . "Over t i m e , p u b l i c housing r e n t s can be expected

t o be s i g n i f i c a n t l y lower than they would have been under the

market r e n t approach i n tr odu ced by t he Fr a se r Government".

Mr Hurf ord sai d t h a t n e g o t i a t i o n s w i t h t he St at es and T e r r i t o r i e s

had been most c o n s t r u c t i v e and encour agi ng. " I b e l i e v e t h a t t o g e t h e r

we can develop a new Housing Agreement which w i l l enable the Commonwealth, S t at e s and T e r r i t o r i e s t o launch a real a t t a c k on h o u s i n g - r e l a t e d

pov er ty over t he next ten y e a r s . "
