AUSTRALIAN TRADE MISSION TO THAILAND

"We believe we have found o p p o r tu n it ie s f o r A u s t r a l i a n industry to j o i n

w it h Thai industry f o r the mutual b e n e f it of our re spective economies",

Mr. Chris Hurford, the A u s tr a l i a n M i n i s t e r f o r Housing and Construction,

said today in Bangkok.

Mr. Hurford, who is leading the f i r s t A u s t r a l i a n m i n i s t e r i a l trade mission

in the cons tru ct ion and re la te d i n d u s t r i e s t o v i s i t Thailand, was addressing

the Aust ra li an -T ha i Chamber of Commerce. He said t h a t a co-ordinated and imaginative approach is needed i f the A u s t r a l i a n c on s tr u c t io n ind us try is

to e s ta b li s h a long-term p o s i t i o n in the Thai market.

"We must seek to be known as valued and responsible partners concerned w i th the development of the region.

" I believe, t h a t we should be t a r g e t i n g our e f f o r t s to those p r o j e c ts

where we have some technology or management exp er ti se to o f f e r .

"From our discussions w i th Thai Government and i n d us tr y representatives we have i d e n t i f i e d a number of o p p o r tu n it ie s both f o r A u s t r a l i a n consultants

and contra ct ors to as s is t in Thai development. These include a c t i v i t i e s

in the f i e l d s o f l i g n i t e e x t r a c t i o n f o r use in power generation, the

development of p o l l u t i o n c o n t r o l s , and sewerage and water tre atm en t.

“ Thailand is f a s t developing i t s o i l and natural gas f i e l d s . With our

recent experiences we belie ve we are well placed t o p a r t i c i p a t e in t h i s

programme.

"Thailand is also undertaking an ambitious programme of upgrading and developing i t s tr a n s p o rt i n f r a s t r u c t u r e . Many of our c i v i l c o n tr ac to rs

have the "know-how" and the exp ertise to a s s i s t in t h i s f i e l d to o .

"The Hawke labor Government is determined to improve s i g n i f i c a n t l y the level of trade in services as well as goods w i t h i n t h i s re g i o n ."

Mr. Hurford said "Me want to do t h i s f o r our mutual b e n e f i t . Such trade

w i l l be both ways. We know Thailand has much to o f f e r too .

"Business now has a Government in A u s t r a l i a which recognises t h a t a partnership approach is essential i f A u s t r a l i a is t o e f f e c t i v e l y l i n k i t s

economy to Thailand's and w it h Th ail an d's becoming i n c re a s i n g l y l i nk ed to A u s t r a l i a ' s . "

Mr. Hurford added th a t he is confident more e f f o r t on both sides w i l l

r e s u l t from the trade mission's v i s i t .

"We have a h ig h ly capable construction and consultancy industry which can compete in almost a l l environments. The challenge before us is to marry t (v s e s k i l l s w ith Thailand's development a s p i r a t i o n s . In t h i s way economic a c t i v i t y in both our countries w i l l be stimulated f o r the be nefit of our

peoples."
