OPTIMISTIC CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY OUTLOOK

"The long-term outlook f o r t he A u s t r a l i a n c o n s t r u c t i o n i n d u st r y is

an o p t i m i s t i c one", t h e Mi n i s t er f o r Housing and Co nst ru cti on and

Mi n i s t er A s s i s t i n g t h e T r e a su r er , Chris Hurford, s a i d today.

Mr. Hurford was addressing t he 25th Anniversary Dinner of the A u s t r a l i a n Federation of Const ructi on Cont r ac tor s in Melbourne.

"The i ndust ry has a s o l i d base in A u s t r a l i a , c o n t r i b u t i n g 8 per cent of

non farm product and employing 300,000 people.

"In a d d i t i o n , t h e r e are many o p p o r t u n i t i e s in Asia f o r A u s t r a l i a n

c o n s u l t a n t s and contr act or s"., Mr. Hurford s a i d .

"I b el iev e we have made real p r og r e s s in implementing a sound c o n s t r u c t i o n i ndust ry policy over t he l a s t 20 months.

Our Government has l i f t e d c i v i l and defence works e xpendi tur e by 16 per cent in 1983-84 and a f u r t h e r 20 per cent t h i s y e a r . But

more needs t o be done.

"In t h a t regard, I c o n g r a t u l a t e the A u s t r a l i a n Fe de ra ti on of Const ru ct ion

Co nt r ac tor s on t h e i r r e p o r t 'Target 2000 : The I n f r a s t r u c t u r e R e p o r t 1.

"This Report is a timely document and i s a va lua ble i n i t i a t i v e by the

Federation on be hal f of A u s t r a l i a 1s c o n s t r u c t i o n i n d u s t r y .

" I n f r a s t r u c t u r e is v i t a l to the maintenance and encouragement of

A u s t r a l i a ‘s economic growth and f o r t he well being of A u s t r a l i a n s .

"Without t he continued development of such important f a c i l i t i e s as good t r a n s p o r t a t i o n ..and communication l i n k s , power g e ne ra ti on and t r an s m i s s i o n systems, urban and soc ial f a c i l i t i e s such as wat er supply and sewerage,

schools and h o s p i t a l s , A u s t r a l i a ' s q u a l i t y of l i f e w i l l s u f f e r " ,

Mr. Hurford s a i d .

"I be li eve the AFCC r epor t w i l l make a va lua ble c o n t r i b u t i o n to

development of the Hawke Labor Government's c o n s t r u c t i o n i ndust ry pol icy over t he next t h r e e y e a r s . "
