MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS A N D ENVIRONMENT

CONFERENCE OF FEDERALLY FUNDED CULTURAL AUTHORITIES, CANBERRA. 13 MARCH

The Minister for Home Affairs and Environment, the Hon. Barry Cohen,

today convened a Conference of Federally Funded Cultural Authorities.

(A list of participants is attached).

The Australian Broadcasting Commission and the Special Broadcasting

Service also were represented.

Mr Cohen said the Conference uas valuable in improving co-operation

between the cultural authorities.

"The Commonwealth appropriation for culture and recreation for 19 83-84

was $599 million, and it was important to ensure that the activities

of the Commonwealth cultural organisations were co-ordinated to ensure the public derived the maximum benefit from the expenditure," Mr

Cohen said.

The Minister said he welcomed the participation of the A.B.C. and the

S.B.S. in these Conferences and the growth of joint ventures between

these organisat ons and the cultural authorities.

These ventures were playing an important part in increasing public acc­

ess to cultural activities and participation in them, particularly in

ruu-al and inner-urban areas, Mr Cohen said.
