WORKING GROUP ON RAINFOREST CONSERVATION

A Working Group has been established to aduise the Minister for Home Affairs and Enuironment on the development of a Commonwealth rainforest conservation policy.

Announcing this today, the Minister for Home Affairs and Environ

ment, Mr Barry Cohen, said the Working Group will develop policy

options for the Government to consider and in particular will

advise on measures the Commonwealth Government codld take in

conjunction with the States and Territories to promote the conservation of rainforests.

The Working Group comprises a broad representation of rainforest

interests including government, industry, unions and conservation ists. The first meeting will be held in Brisbane on August 23.

The establishment of the Working Group was suggested by Mr Cohen

at a Commonwealth-sponsored rainforest conference held in Cairns

earlier this year.

"The conference supported my suggestion and recognised the need

for a national policy on rainforest conservation," Mr Cohen said.
