NEWS MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS AND ENVIRONMENT

GRANTS TO VOLUNTARY CONSERVATION ORGANISATIONS

The 1984/5 Program of Grants to Voluntary Conservation

Organisations is an increase of 33% over the amount allocated last year.

Funding of $850 000 for this year was announced today by the Minister for Home Affairs and Environment, Mr Barry Cohen.

The increased funding is a further substantial step towards meeting the Government's commitment tp increase the overall funding of the Program to the 1975 level in real terms.

The grants are made to environment centres and other national, state and regional conservation organisations whose main aim is the enhancement and protection of the environment.

Grants under the scheme are primarily to help with administrative costs but a proportion of the funds may be used by recipients for technical assistance, conference attendance, legal assistance

and research expenditure. "

Mr Cohen said he would announce the allocation of grants

to successful applicants as soon as possible.

He said that the voluntary conservation organisations as a whole provide valuable services in promoting public education

and awareness of environmental issues, and in carrying out work to preserve and enhance Australia's environment.
