The M i n i s t e r f o r Foreign A f f a i r s / Mr B i L l Hayden MP/ said

today he had received r e p o r ts o f th e g r a n tin g by the Sejm (th e P o lis h

P a rlia m e n t) on 21 J u ly o f an amnesty t o p o l i t i c a l p r i s o n e r s .

According to these r e p o r ts t h i s amnesty was an u n c o n d it io n a l one/

and a p p lie d to a l l lea din g S o l i d a r i t y a c t i v i s t s c u r r e n t l y in

d e t e n t i o n . The fo u r leaders o f the P o lis h Committee in Defence of

the Workers (KOR)/ whose t r i a l was adjourned on 18 J u l y / were a lso

in c lu d e d / as w e ll as prominent members o f the form er G ierek Government

who had faced s e rio u s charges.

Mr Hayden noted t h a t A u s t r a l i a had fo llo w e d the issue of

P o la n d 's p o l i t i c a l d e ta in e e s w ith c o n s id e ra b le i n t e r e s t / and in la t e

June had made r e p r e s e n ta tio n s t o a high le v e l o f the P o lis h Government/

e xp re ssin g the hope t h a t a l l those in d e te n t io n on p o l i t i c a l grounds

would be re le a se d .

Mr Hayden s ta te d t h a t the Sejm's a c t i o n was welcomed by the

A u s t r a l i a n Government/ which would c o n tin u e t o f o l l o w f u r t h e r

developments c l o s e l y . An improvement o f the p o l i t i c a l c lim a te in

Poland would not o n ly be welcomed by a l l A u s t r a l i a n s / but was

e s s e n t i a l to the e sta b lis h m e n t o f a s t a b le balance in Europe and of

p r o d u c tiv e exchanges between Eastern and Western n a tio n s on a number

of v i t a l is s u e s . He hoped t h a t th e Sejm's a c t io n would lead t o the

n a t i o n a l r e c o n c i l i a t i o n needed in P o lan d/ but observed t h a t much would

depend on whether a c lim a te of m oderation would now e v o lv e .
