The mission observed the act of self-determination there in April 1984,

in which the inhabitants of the te rrito ry voted by a very wide margin to

integrate with Australia.

The General Assembly's approval of the report will mean an end

to Australia's last colonial obligation in the United Nations.

Mr Hayden said that during the session the Australian delegation

would be emphasising Australia's interest and concern for progress in

disarmament and on human rights questions. I t would be actively involved

in the Assembly's consideration of Antarctica. Australia would strongly

support the Antarctic Treaty system as the best means of furthering peace

and international co-operation in that continent.

As well Australia is a candidate for a two-year term (1985-86)

on the United Nations Security Council. The elections take place during

the session.

Mr Hayden w ill address the General Assembly on 2 October.
