STATEMENT BY THE HON J S DAWKINS, MP MINISTER FOR FINANCE

The Minister for Finance, Mr John Dawkins, today announced

that he had approved an advance of $1,387,000 to Tasmania

under the Interim Financial Agreement relating to

financial assistance following cessation of· the

Gordon-below-Franklin project, including a further advance

of $30,000 for the employment of rangers in the South West

Tasmania World Heritage Area to 30 June 1984.

The Interim Financial Agreement provides that, subject to

the provisions of the Agreement, financial assistance

payments will be made by the Commonwealth to Tasmania from

time to time at the request of the State, and that the

Minister for Finance may make advances to Tasmania on

account of financial assistance that may become payable to

the State in accordance with the Agreement. The Agreement

also provides for the Minister to request Tasmania to

furnish documents and other material to justify the making

of an advance to the State.

This advance will bring to $15,023,000 the total amount

advanced to Tasmania under the Agreement in respect of

financial assistance for expenditure on ‘ approved

employment creation projects and payments to contractors

formerly engaged on the Gordon-below-Franklin project.

Additional advances to enable the employment of rangers

for essential management of the South West Tasmania World

Heritage Area during 1983-84 will now total $530,000.

Further requests from the State for advances under the

provisions of the Agreement will be considered as and when

they are received.
