New regional director for DEIR

Mr John Edward Cooley has been appointed Regional Director of the Commonwealth

Department of Employment and Industrial Relations in Victoria.

He takes over from Mr Sol Solomon who will retire shortly.

Born in Queensland in 1932, Mr Cooley was educated at Brisbane Grammar School.

He joined the Public Service in 1951 as a Cadet Engineer with the then

Postmaster-General's Department and graduated from the University of Queensland

in 1954 with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree.

He spent 15 years as a Communications Engineer in Queensland and Mew South

Wales, and in the Department's Central Office in Melbourne.

In 1969, he joined the then Department of Labour and National Service as

Principal Executive Officer, Productivity Promotion.

Since 1970, he has occupied several senior positions in the Department of

Employment and Industrial Relations in both policy and administrative areas

including the position of General Manager, Labour Market Programs, in tie

Commonwealth Employment Service.

Prior to being appointed Regional Director Victoria, he held the position of

Fimst Assistant Secretary in DEZR's Employment Support Policy and Programs Division,

Canberra, where he had responsibility for toe introduction of toe Commonwealth

Government's S3C0 million job creation scheme - tee Community Employment Program.

Mr Cccleu is married with four children.
