20 September 1984

A review of arts education and training has been established by the

Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Senator Susan Ryan, and the

Minister for Home Affairs and Environment, Mr Barry Cohen.

The review is being conducted jointly by the Commonwealth Tertiary

Education Commission and the Australia Council.

It will focus on the extent to which existing courses meet vocational

and other objectives including the range of provision for disadvantaged

groups and access to the various forms of arts training. Attention

will be given to the efficiency of existing course arrangements and

student needs.

The review also will look at relationships between tertiary

institutions and the community, and between the arts industry and

Government agencies involved in the funding of the arts.

Dr Peter Botsman, Director of the Brisbane College of Advanced

Education and a former Deputy Chairman of the Australia Council, will

conduct the review.

He will be advised by a broadly based steering committee chaired by

Dr Gregor Ramsey of the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission.

The steering committee will meet this month.

It is expected that the review will be completed by May 1985. It will

provide a basis for the CTEC and the Australia Council to advise the

Government on future policies for the arts.

The Ministers said that the review was timely in view of the

Government's interest in the quality of higher education and the

relationship of programs to employment opportunities. Dr Botsman had

been asked to consult widely.
