SENATOR RYAN ANNOUNCES MILLION DOLLAR GRANT

FOR NEW SCHOOL AT COWRIE, A.C.T.

The federal Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Senator Ryan, today

announced a capital grant of $1,072,300 for a new Catholic primary school

at Cowrie, A.C.T.

•The Holy Family Primary school will offer places to an estimated

288 students in the rapidly growing Tuggeranong Valley,' Senator Ryan

said. 'The A.C.T. Catholic Education Office is also providing a

substantial contribution towards building the new school, which other

education authorities agree is necessary to meet demand in South

Tuggeranong.

'The school has the solid professionalism of the Catholic Education

Office behind it, so I am satisfied that it is a good educational

investment. The Commonwealth capital contribution will ensure that the

Catholic system's ability to service its existing debts is not unduly

s trained.'

The grant will be made through the Commonwealth Schools Commission.

•When the school opens in 1985 it will be eligible to receive

Commonwealth per student grants,' Senator Ryan pointed out. '1 am

looking forward to seeing the new school, which will be built to a design

which allows it to make the best use of the energy of the sun.'
