Twenty-five awards for study in the United States in the 1985/86

academic year are being offered by the Australian-American Educational


The Fulbright awards are offered in three categories - senior, post­

doctoral and postgraduate. All candidates for the awards must be

Australian citizens and they must agree to return to Australia after

completing their studies. All awards must commence between 1 July 1985

and 30 June 1986.

Senior and postgraduate awards are travel grants only and are

restricted to covering the costs of return travel from Australia to the

United States at the most economical airfare rates available. Post­

doctoral fellowships, in addition to covering these travel costs,

provide a maintenance allowance of $US9,000 (approx. $A10,710) per


Six senior awards will be offered in 1985 to people, who hold senior

academic posts or are senior practising members of their professions,

and who wish to study, lecture, research or carry out advanced

professional training in the United States.

Nine postdoctoral fellowships will be offered to support people who are

about to complete, or who have recently completed, their doctorates and

who plan to pursue postdoctoral study in the United States.

Ten awards will be offered for graduate students wishing to:

. undertake an approved course of study for an American higher degree

or its equivalent;

. engage in research applicable to an Australian higher degree; or

. undertake advanced professional training.

Applications for the postdoctoral fellowships and the postgraduate

awards close on 30 September 1984, and on 31 December 1984 for the

senior awards. Application forms and further information are available
