BRUCE LLOYD, MP OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON COMMUNICATIONS

AUSTRALIA POST

the Federal Opposition Spokesman on Communications, Brucfe Lloyd, today welcomed the.Labor Government1s decision to preserve < Australia Post's monopoly of basic letter delivery.

However he warned that the Opposition would press for greater accountability of Australia:Post’s operations in the future. .

Mr Lloyd said the decision to retain APIs monopoly ratified; ■ . a decision by Neil Brown, Minister in the, previous coalition’ Government# to. accept the Bradley Committee's recommendations on Australia Post.

Mr Lloyd also welcomed the announcement that Australia Post would be allowed to offer facsimile and electronic mail services. · ;

He said this was in keeping with' changing technology and development in postal services overseas. , ■·. '

However, he warned,, the new services and the re-introduction of a courier service highlighted the need for improved financial management and accountability. . . '

"It is important that Australia Post operates efficiently and profitably in these arpas without any subsidy from their letter delivery . . o p e r a t i o n s ; ' . . . .

.Mr Lloyd commented that from observations and discussions with postal officials in the United States and Canada, there was an obligation on both the postal service and the major mail.users, to regular. moriiter the system, to ensure service was being provided at all times . with optimum efficiency. . , :
