YOUTH SERVICES SCHEME

The Government's intention to provide $1.9 million for a further 12 months' extension of the Youth Services Scheme from 1 July 1983 was given support by the Shadow Minister for Social Security,

Tony Messner.

Senator Messner has said that the announcement of continued funding came just in time for many of the 78 Youth Services Schemes. Some had already given notice to their workers.

"Many groups had contacted me expressing concern about continued funding. Not one group could have continued operation after 1 July without ongoing Government funding", Senator Messner said.

Senator Messner was disappointed that the announcement was made so close to the termination date. "This was despite previous assurances from the Minister than an early announcement about funding would be made".

Senator Messner claimed it was a 'band-aid1 measure of the Government in the area of Youth homelessness.

Senator Messner called on the Minister to announce, and implement a long-term plan to help the Youth Homelessness problem.

Rather than this yearly funding, Senator Messner suggested that triennial funding be implemented to aid the long-term planning in the area of youth homelessness.
