ST A TEMENT BY PETER AiCRPISShadow M inister for Transport 24 February, 1983

A Federal Labor Government will introduce a Jobs on Local Roads Program (JOLOR), to provide grants to Local Councils to improve local roads.

A proposed $70 m. is to be allocated in 1983/84 under JOLOR for Local Government road construction and maintenance.

Due to the high labour content of local roads construction and maintenance, JOLOR will create nearly 8,000 extra jobs, directly and indirectly.

JOLOR has been enthusiastically endorsed by the Australian Council of Local Government Associations (ACLGA) - the peak national organisation of all Local Government bodies in Australia.

Labor is also committed to maintaining the Bicentennial Roads Program and Roads Grants Act Scheme.

We will also accelerate construction of the National Highway system.

In addition, Labor will consult with States and Local Government to determine procedures to ensure that Federal Road Grants for Local Government are passed on in full to their intended recipients.

JOLOR will be an ongoing program, aimed at creating the maximum number of jobs, dispersed throughout Australia.

It will significantly reduce the backlog of local road works, improve communication^ provide safer travel and give economic and energy savings.
