Women’s Water Polo Wins Recognition at Last

“The International Olympic Committee’s decision to include women’s water polo in the

Sydney 2000 Olympic Games is a great step towards women’s sport receiving the

recognition it deserves”, the Minister for the Status of Women, the Hon Judi Moylan MP,

said today.

“While I would have preferred to have seen women’s water polo included from the

beginning, I congratulate FINA, SOCOG, and all those involved in now making this

most sensible decision. It can only improve Australia’s chances of winning gold in 2000”,

the Minister said.

“Australia’s women water polo players are clearly a winning team. This is a great

victory, not just for women’s water polo, but for women’s sport in general”,

Mrs Moylan said. “The decision signals a positive future for women’s sport in

achieving the equality and recognition it deserves”.

“All Australian’s can now look forward to sharing in the achievements of their

women water polo players, now they have won the right to represent their country in

the Games Australia can be proud to host”, Mrs Moylan said.
