Federal Funding for Local Govemm...alia Media Release 20 August 199'

The Hon Warwick Smith MP Minister for Sport, Territories and Local Government Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Sydney 2000 Games

The Federal Minister for Sport, Territories and Local Government, Warwick Smith MP, today announced that the Commonwealth would provide $87.3 million in financial assistance grants to the 77 South Australian councils in 1997-98.

"All these grants are untied. This means they can be used by the receiving councils according to their local priorities.

"The Government is aware of the importance of the financial assistance grants to councils, particularly for councils in rural and regional Australia. With this in mind, the Federal Government has managed in the last two Budgets to keep the financial impact on local government to an absolute minimum despite the severe budgetary difficulties we inherited from Labor.

"In South Australia, around 49 per cent of these grants will go to rural and regional councils.

"Nationally, the Federal Government will pay over $1.2 billion in financial assistance grants to local government in 1997-98. South Australia now receives 7.2 per cent of the national total", Mr Smith said.

The grants to individual councils were recommended by the South Australian Local Government Grants Commission, an independent body established for the purpose of determining the distribution of the grants to councils in South Australia. The grants are paid under the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995 with the first quarterly payment expected to be made tomorrow.
