MEDIA RELEASE ^ « i P ^ S E N A T O R N IC K M IN C H IN Special Minister of State

Launch of “Republic - Yes or No?’’

Special Minister of State Senator Nick Minchin today released the Federal Government’s public information document “Republic - Yes or No? " designed to provide Australian voters with background information on the key issues and options in the republic debate.

The release of the information has been timed to broadly coincide with electors receiving the voting material for the election of delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

The Government is committed to ensuring that before the Constitutional Convention commences, and as they cast their vote in the election of delegates, the Australian people are provided with unbiased infoimation detailing issues involved in changing Australia’s Constitution.

“Republic - Yes or No? ” will be distributed through major national, metropolitan, regional, indigenous and ethnic newspapers from Saturday 8 November (see attached schedule). A total of 6.75 million copies have been printed for distribution.

It provides a balanced account of the current constitutional arrangements plus the arrangements for and against change.

The material is a fair representation of both sides of the debate, and is designed to assist readers to work through the issues rather than to argue the point one way or another.

The arguments for and against change were provided by the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy and the Australian Republican Movement and have not been edited.

The booklet is intended to be an introduction to the issues, not a full analysis.

The Government is also encouraging all Australians to become involved in the debate by inviting written submissions which will be provided to the Convention delegates.

These submissions can be sent either to the Prime Minister or Senator Minchin, or through the internet. The convention e-mail address is as follows:

convention@dpmc. gov. au

Copies of “Republic - Yes or No? ” are also available through the Convention’s homepage http ://www. dpmc. gov. au/convention.
