NOBEL PRIZE WINNER VISITS AUSTRALIA

The Federal Science and Technology Minister, Peter McGauran, has welcomed to Australia Professor R olf Zinkernagel o f Switzerland, joint winner o f the 1996 Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Professor Zinkernagel and Australian Professor Peter Doherty gained the prestigious award for groundbreaking immunology research carried out in the 1970s at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Canberra.

Mr McGauran offered his warmest congratulations to Professor Zinkernagel.

“It is a pleasure to meet and offer due recognition to the other member o f the winning team,” Mr McGauran said.

“Australia’s scientific standing will be enhanced on the international stage by the research that led to the awarding o f the Nobel Prize to Professors Zinkernagel and Doherty.

“It is this kind o f achievement, the highest honour in the world available to scientists, that will inspire youngsters to contemplate a career in science.

“It is also a tribute to the John Curtin School o f Medical Research, adding to its growing list of connections with past winners o f the Nobel Prize in medicine.”
