Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government

The Territories Minister, Alex Somlyay, today announced that the Governor-General has appointed Mr James Birrell to be a member of the Board of the National Capital Authority.

Mr Birrell is a distinguished architect and urban planner, holding Life Fellowships in both the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and the Royal Australian Planning Institute. From 1955-60 he was Chief Architect at Brisbane City Council, and for the following five years was the University Architect for the University of Queensland. He is the recipient of a number of awards for his work for urban design and is currently the principal of a private architectural consultancy in Queensland.

The author of numerous publications on building, planning and architecture, Mr Birrell has published a book on the life and work of Walter Burley Griffin.

“I am delighted with this appointment. Mr Birrell will bring to the Authority a wealth of experience in urban and regional planning, plus a real appreciation of Griffin’s original concept for Canberra,” Mr Somlyay said.

The Minister also paid tribute to the retiring member of the Authority, Dr Catherin Bull, and expressed his thanks for her five years’ service to the Board.
