SENATOR THE HON. GRANT TAMBLING Senator for the Northern Territory

PARLIAMENT TOLD OF TERRITORY SUCCESSES

CLP Senator Grant Tambling congratulated Northern Territory athletes on their Arafura Games success in Federal Parliament today.

Senator Tambling said the Territory team's current tally o f 106 medals - 76 more than their nearest competitor - was an outstanding result.

"Territorians can be justifiably proud o f this excellent performance and can look forward to continuing success in the remaining days o f competition," he said.

"This result could only have been achieved though the ongoing encouragement o f Territorians for their local athletes, through the tireless efforts o f the organisers and the generous financial support o f the Territory Government."

Senator Tambling said the Arafura Games were a valuable cross-cultural exchange at a time when racism and xenophobia were being promoted by some sectors o f the community.

"The open, friendly and multicultural atmosphere o f Darwin indicates to the participants o f the Arafura Games that these views are held by a small minority and are not the opinion o f the vast majority o f Australians," he said.

Senator Tambling said the participation o f a Defence Force team o f 265 in the Games was also an important contribution to the event.
