New Chairman for Drug Evaluation Committee

International clinical cancer expert Professor Martin Tattersall has been appointed as Chair of Australia's peak advisory body on drug evaluation, the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC), Senator Bob Woods announced today.

Senator Woods, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Family Services, said Professor Tattersall would replace outgoing Chair Professor Susan Pond immediately.

Professor Tattersall is Professor o f Cancer Medicine at the University o f Sydney and cancer physician at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

"Professor Tattersall has worked on World Health Organisation and National Health and Medical Research Council working parties on cancer. He has an international reputation in research in clinical oncology," Senator Woods said.

Senator Woods paid tribute to outgoing Chair Professor Susan Pond, who completed her three-year term o f office at the end o f December.

"Under Professor Pond's leadership, the ADEC has achieved new levels o f excellence and professionalism," Senator Woods said.

"She has maintained the independence o f the Committee, and advanced its scientific credibility and clinical relevance, while balancing the pressures associated with the demand for new drugs.

"I am confident that her successor, Professor Tattersall, will maintain this outstanding level of contribution," the Senator said.
