Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Senator Amanda Vanstone, today announced the appointment of Professor Vicki Sara as Chair of the Australian Research Council.

“I welcome Professor Sara’s appointment as full-time Chair of the ARC for the next three years” Senator Vanstone said.

“Professor Sara will be the first woman ARC Chair.

“She has more than twenty years worth of research experience in both Australia and internationally. She brings substantial overseas experience and a diverse research background to the position of ARC Chair.”

Professor Sara said she was delighted with the appointment.

“As Chair of the ARC, I want to ensure that Australia excels as a major player in the international research arena and that career opportunities are provided for researchers here in this country.”

Professor Sara is the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Queensland University of Technology.

She is also the Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Diagnostic Technologies, and a current member of the Australian Research Council and Chair of the Council’s Institutional Grants Committee.

Professor Sara returned to Australia from Sweden in 1993, after heading the world renowned Karolinska Institute’s Endocrine Pathology Research Laboratory.

Her research has focussed on hormonal regulation of the growth and development of the nervous system and in 1993, she was awarded the Swedish Rolf Luft Medal for research excellence in endocrinology, and in 1994 the Sir John Eccles Award by the National Health and Medical Research Council.

She has also been involved in a number of advisory committees reporting to Government.

“Professor Sara’s appointment is timely as the ARC will shortly be making critical funding and programme decisions,” Senator Vanstone said.

“Professor Sara will well placed to lead the Council in its role as a more autonomous independent body.”
