H IG H C O U R T A P P O IN T M E N T

I am pleased to announce today the appointment of Mr Ian David Francis Callinan QC as a Justice of the High Court of Australia from 3 February 1998.

Mr Callinan, 60, is a prominent Queensland barrister currently practising in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and, from time to time, elsewhere throughout Australia. He has appeared in practically all Australian jurisdictions including the High Court, the Federal Court, State Supreme Courts and the Industrial Relations Commission.

Mr Callinan was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1960 and has practised as a barrister since 1965. He was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1978. He was President of the Australian Bar Association in 1984-85 and was President of the Queensland Bar Association from 1984-87.

The appointment arises as a consequence of the announced retirement of the Honourable Justice John Toohey AC. Justice Toohey’s resignation takes effect from midnight on 2 February 1998.
