I w elcom e to d ay ’s announcem ent by the Q ueensland A ttorney-G eneral, the H onourable D enver B eanland M LA , that the Q ueensland G overnm ent w ill act to reform its present arrangem ents for the delivery o f legal aid.

This w ill allow one body m ore effectively to deliver legal aid for both the State and C om m onw ealth G overnm ents.

T he Q ueensland G overnm ent w ill reconstitute the present Q ueensland Legal A id C om m ission to achieve greater efficiencies, w hile still allow ing "business as usual at the shopfront for legal aid".

U nder this arrangem ent, the Q ueensland G overnm ent w ould provide funding at present levels for State m atters, and the C om m onw ealth w ould separately provide funding for C om m onw ealth m atters under an agency agreem ent w ith the new C om m ission.

T he C om m onw ealth stands ready to conclude detailed negotiations w ith representatives o f the Q ueensland G overnm ent to ensure that there is continuity in the arrangem ents for jo in t delivery o f Com m onw ealth and State legal aid services in Q ueensland.

These new arrangem ents offer both G overnm ents the opportunity to ensure that their individual priorities for legal aid delivery under their respective laws are served efficiently and in a properly accountable way.

C om m onw ealth and State legal aid recipients w ill continue to enjoy access to legal aid w hich w ill be delivered under the new arrangem ents.
