ONE NATION - MANY VOICES

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS FOR ALL The Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Tim Fischer, today at Darling Harbour launched Anthem - A Celebration of Australia — a project designed to encourage all Australians to learn the words of our National Anthem. .

Anthem is a unique double CD which brings together 17 of Australia's leading musicians and musical groups to promote Advance Australia Fair.

"The artists have provided as their 'Gift to the Nation' their own style of the National Anthem and whether people prefer classic, rock, country or jazz, there is an arrangement to appeal to everyone," Mr Fischer said.

"The wide range of musical formats reflects the diversity of musical tastes in the community and the diversity which goes to make Australia what it is today."

The companion CD features a mix of new original material and classic tracks which form a cultural snapshot of Australia in the 90s.

Impetus for the project came from ongoing research by the Federal Department of Administrative Services which shows that while more than 75 per cent of Australians like Advance Australia Fair and want to keep it as our National Anthem, nearly 70 per cent don't know the first line!

"With the Sydney Olympics followed by the centenary of Federation in 2001, the eyes of the world will be focussed on us increasingly in the next few years," the Minister for Administrative Services, the Hon. David Jull, said.

"Knowing the words of our National Anthem is a simple and effective way to show the world the pride we have in our country and in our culture in all its diversity."

The Anthem project, which is a unique collaboration between Mr Jull's Department, the ABC and the Australian music industry, began two years ago.

It has been designed to be cost-neutral and all profits from the sale of the double CD will go to the Smith Family charity which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 1997.

Copies of the CD will be available nationally for $29.95 from leading record retailers, ABC Shops and Government Info Shops.
