DAVID SIMMONSMINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT — MINISTER FOR FAMILY SUPPORTFEASIBILITY STUDY FOR PARKES AS DISTRIBUTION CENTRE16 June 1992The Minister for Local Government, David Simmons, today announced a grant o f $40,000 to the Parkes Shire Council to pursue the feasibility of using Goobang Junction, near Parkes, as an inland port and national freight distribution centre."The concept of Parkes as an inland port was awarded a Commendation in the 1990-91 National Awards for Innovation in Local Government administered by my Department," Mr Simmons said.The feasibility study is being undertaken as part o f the Federal Department's Regional * Development Initiative - an element of the 1991-92 Local Government Development Program."One element of the Initiative is to assist with demonstration projects which can help overcome barriers and to facilitate economic activity in regions of Australia," Mr Simmons said. ..Parkes Shire lies at the junction o f two major national routes: a north-south highway and an east-west rail link. The Shire's central location relative to several regions in New South Wales and its fast and easy access to several capital cities are other advantages.
