DAVID SIMMONS MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT — MINISTER FOR FAMILY SUPPORT

UNSEALED ROADS "GOOD PRACTICE" RESEARCH PROJECT

The Federal Minister for Local Government, David Simmons, today announced the funding of a project to produce for the first time a "Manual of Good Practice" on the maintenance and development of Australia's unsealed roads. ■

"Australia has 810,000 km of roads, over 600,000 km of which are unsealed. The responsibility for these unsealed roads rests almost entirely with Local Government. Some rural councils spend over 50 per cent of their total budget on their roads, and

councils nationally are spending about $1.5 billion each year", he said.

"Unsealed roads are vital to the efficiency of rural production and to the well-being of rural communities.

The Minister said there is a serious lack of information on good practices for maintaining and developing these roads available to councils and their engineers. . This project, which is to produce

a manual of "good practices", seeks to correct this situation.

"Consultations with Local Government and the States have indicated overwhelming support for this project" he said. "

Production of the manual is the first step in what is expected to be an on-going process.

"The project is being conducted in association with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB),. the recognised centre of road technology expertise in Australia, with guidance from the . Australian Local Government Association, the Institute of Municipal Engineers, a State Local Government Association and a

State Road Authority.
