DAVID SIMMONS MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER FOR FAMILY SUPPORT

FEDERAL GRANTS FOR LOCAL G O VERNM ENT IN W ESTERN AUSTRALIA

20 August 1992 .

One hundred and thirty-eight Western Australian Councils will receive grants totalling $121.7 million in 1992-93 through the provision of Commonwealth general purpose funding assistance. These assistance grants comprise $70.9 million in financial

assistance grants and $50.8 million in identified local roads grants.

The grants were announced today by the [Federal Minister for Local Government, Mry; [David Simmons^ and the Western Australian Minister for Justice, Planning, Local Government and the South West, Mr David Smith.

"All these grants are untied and can be used by councils to meet their individual expenditure priorities", Mr Simmons said.

"One hundred and four Western Australian Councils (75%) will receive an increase in their basic grants in 1992/93 compared to 1991/92 grants. In addition, forty six councils will receive an allocation for special works funded from the road grant," Mr Smith said.

Mr Simmons said that the Federal Government’s allocation of these grants reflects its commitment to maintain or increase Local Government financial assistance in real terms. It also continues to give effect to the 1990 Special Premiers’ Conference decision to untie Commonwealth local road grants. ,

He said that Local Government would receive a total of $1,047.9 million nationally, comprising $735.8 million in financial assistance grants and $312.0 million in identified local roads grants. These amounts represent a 2.91 per cent increase over the 1991-92 Local Government entitlement, and compare favourably with the expected inflation rate of 1.7 per cent.

"The Western Australian share of financial assistance grants is an increase of $1.2 million over 1991-92, while roads grants to councils have increased by $1.4 million over 1991-92 levels. The State’s share of the financial assistance pool has been adjusted to reflect relative population movements between the States," Mr Smith said.

These grants are allocated amongst councils on the basis of recommendations made by the Western Australian Local Government Grants Commission. .

Details of individual grants to councils are attached. Further information: David Chalker (06) 277 7240
