COALITION ANNOUNCES $18M ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR YOUTH SUICIDE STRATEGY

February 20, 1996

The Federal Coalition has pledged an additional $18m to fund a National Strategy to combat the tragedy of youth suicide as a key element part of its Youth Policy, unveiled in Brisbane today .

Shadow Youth Affairs Minister Senator Ian Campbell said $6m of the package was specifically aimed at regional and rural areas.

“Another $6m will go towards voluntary community phone and crisis counselling support programs,” Senator Campbell said.

“Funding has been pledged for education of parents ($3m) and health professionals ($2m) with another $1m going to research."

Senator Campbell said the funding is additional to that provided by existing government programmes which the Coalition will maintain.

“The tragic reality is that the Australian youth suicide rate has doubled in a decade and we have one of the highest incidences in the world.

“More young Australians die by their own hand than from AIDS or road trauma."

Senator Campbell said the Coalition’s commitment was for more support to services “on the ground”.

“A Howard Government will also work with the media industry at a national summit to devise a Code of Conduct on the reporting of suicides to avoid copycat incidences,” Senator Campbell said.
