11 April, 1996_____________ MEDIA RELEASE 96/210

ANTI-URANIUM FAX-A-THON TO BOMBARD HOWARD’S OFFICE

The Australian Democrats will lend their support to an anti-uranium “fax-a-thon”.

The Friends of the Earth campaign encourages people concerned about uranium mining to write down their views and fax them to Prime Minister John Howard's office today.

Democrats' Deputy Leader Senator Meg Lees said it was important for the Prime Minister to understand the depth of community feeling on uranium mining.

“W e urge all Australians concerned about nuclear issues to fax or write to Mr Howard today and tell him what they think,” Senator Lees said.

The fax numbers are: (02) 251 4800 or (06) 273 4100.

The Australian Democrats are totally opposed to the mining and selling of uranium and plan and are currently examining ways to ban uranium exports.

Senator Lees said: “Yesterday’s release of a report into the leaking of up to 5 million litres of water from the Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine highlights the sorts of environmental concerns associated with uranium mining.

“The prospect of new mines being allowed in Kakadu only adds to these concerns.

“The Democrats will be doing all we can to stop these mines. It's important for individuals to also play a part and this Friends of the Earth campaign is one way of getting the message across.”
