MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR IAN G. CAMPBELL SHADOW MINISTER FOR SPORT, RECREATION & YOUTH AFFAIRS

COALITION SUPPORTS ATS

September 15, 1995

Federal Shadow Sports Minister, Senator Ian Campbell, has re-assured elite sportspeople that the Coalition has no plans to dismantle the AIS.

Speaking in Perth this morning, Senator Campbell said the wrong interpretation had been placed on comments he made after a Coalition Sports Ministers and Shadows conference in Canberra on Wednesday.

"I said that the Coalition supports the AIS, which has operated as a de-centralised centre of excellence for most of its life," Senator Campbell said.

"We will ensure that continues but will strongly resist any coercive attempts to centralise all elite sports development in Canberra."

Senator Campbell said concerns were raised by a number of sports ministers about proposals to reduce the influence of state institutes.

"The Coalition believes this would be counter-productive," Senator Campbell said.

"Not every developing athlete wants to leave their family and support structure and move to Canberra.

"There must be a place for state institutes working with the AIS for the overall good of sport.

"The AIS was a Coalition initiative by the Fraser Government in 1982, and it's one of which we are proud and remain committed to."
