THE ACCORD - VIII STRIKES AND YOUR OUT

How many attempts does the Government need to get it right?

Commenting on references in Accord Mark VIII to reviewing the Maternity Allowance, Mr Ruddock said "How can you believe what the Government has said when Keating failed in the Budget to honour Mark VII to deliver $1,800 to parents.

Instead he settled for a soft option means tested lump sum currently totalling only $816."

The Accord is nothing more than, "if the budgetry and economic circumstances are right we will review it at some stage before March 1999 when the Accord expires" Mr Ruddock said.

The Government is again deferring and shirking the issue of the Maternity Allowance.

The Prime Minister should stop telling Australians that he is interested in the welfare of families and then disappoint them by failing to deliver.

"Once again Australians are being wooed, in an attempt to entice them into Keating's web in the lead up to the next Federal election" Mr Ruddock said today.
