PRIME MINISTER CONTRADICTS MINISTER FOR HOUSING

Reports in today's media that next week's Economic Statement will allow young home-buyers access to superannuation are in stark contrast to comments made earlier this week by the Minister for Housing, Mr Howe.

Indeed, Minister Howe stated quite clearly that the Economic Statement would not contain any special relief for home-buyers nor for the housing industry.

However, according to reports today the Prime Minister intends giving home-buyers access to their accumulated superannuation savings to purchase a house.

In anyone's terms this constitutes significant assistance for home buyers. Similarly, the housing industry will receive a substantial boost from the resultant increase in demand for housing.

Is there a lack of communication between the Prime Minister and his Deputy or is it a case of an ineffectual Minister being overruled once again by his Prime Minister? (Remember the $2.50 Medicare surcharge.)

Either way, this is another nail in the coffin of Minister Howe,
