FRASER ISLAND MINING NOT ON; BRUCE SCOTT MP.

STATEMENT BY BROCE SCOTT MP. SHADOW MINISTER FOR REGIONAL AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT. MEMBER FOR MARANOA.

Reports appearing in today's Sydney Morning Herald and The Age that I am advocating the mining of Fraser Island are completely wrong.

Speaking historically, what I said to the journalist was:-■ Fraser Island and Kakadu are good examples of how mining can be carried out without harm to the environment.

The fact that both areas are still in pristine condition confines this, as does their eventual acceptance on World Heritage Listings."

AT NO STAGE DID I SAY TO THE JOURNALIST THAT WE SHOULD MINE A

HERITAGE AREA.
