WTT.T.TS AT.T. OVER THE PLACE ON OANTAS PRIVATISATION

Finance Minister Willis was all over the place today when

answering a Dorothy Dix question in the House of Representatives, according to the Julian Beale, the Federal Member for Bruce and Shadow Minister for Privatisation.

He was asked to comment on a press report that it was likely that the Qantas privatisation would be delayed.

Minister Willis said that no more than 49% of Qantas would be sold in a trade sale - while both he and his Department (in

recent Senate Estimates) have previously said that the trade sale might be of 100% of Qantas.

He praised the profit performance of Qantas ($137 million in the 1991/92 year) - while just two weeks ago at an Aviation

Conference in Sydney, he was bagging the Qantas management.

In identifying late March for the issuing of shares to the

Australian public, he allowed three major qualifications, namely - the state of the capital markets - the state of the domestic and overseas aviation markets, and - the timing of the election

After all these contradictions, Minister Willis said that it was "possible" the Qantas privatisation could be delayed, rather than "likely" it would be delayed.

It is time for the Prime Minister to carpet Minister Willis and tell him to get his story straight.
